Your first income stream - oDesk

Creating an income stream is not a science. It is actually a very logical process and if you are serious about creating your first stream, you will love oDesk!

oDesk is a virtual hub where employers (buyers) and providers (this could be you) can meet each other in a safe environment with the eye on doing business with each other.

Registering for an account is absolutely free and if you follow a few basic rules, you can start to work almost immediately.

I registered on oDesk one day and received an offer for work the next day.  Therefore it is very important to have a killer profile with as much info as possible.

To freelance or not to Freelance, that is the question.

Freelancing is not just about being a freelance writer!  You can freelance any skill such as lead generation, data entry, website design, web research and many more.

If you know how to work in Microsoft Word, there can be a job for you.  If you are good at number crunching and excel, you will receive excellent ROI!

There are jobs for Virtual assistants and chat providers.  Look at the following picture to see how many different kinds of jobs are available.

First step

Before you start working on oDesk you must first write down a list of the kind of services you will be able to offer.

List all the skills you have and keep it handy for when you register on oDesk.

For example:

Word, Excel, SEO, data manipulation etc.

Compile a full resume and keep it handy as to fill in your profile - which will be discussed on the following hub - and keep on adding to it as you go along.  You will be amazed at what you will learn on oDesk.

Remember that everything you do or submit on oDesk should be as complete as possible.  Rather have too much than too little!

My success stories

Successes in oDesk

  • I registered on oDesk on 8 May 2010 and landed my first job on 9 May 2010.  I also received a five star rating for the job and was promoted to team leader with an adjustment to my remuneration
  • My second job I got invited to a interview and landed a SEO job with a steadymonthly income.
  • My third job is for writing articles for a boating company.
  • My fourth job is installing a blog platform, tweaking of template and subsequent blog articles.

As you can see, not all jobs have to be about writing.  You can do so much more and receive an excellent income.

Glad to see you had success on Odesk, though would like to see what kind of money those jobs actually paid. There seems to be many jobs that pay ridiculously low on Odesk, that I assume, are fulfilled by third world folks. Which is better, producing content for Odesk or Hubpages?

Thanks

I have yet to receive any income from hubpages - but I haven't made much hubs yet.

It really depends on which jobs you apply for and negotiating. So far I am very satisfied with the deals I've made.

When I've made a few more hubs, I will make a comparison between the two.
